Britain's Prime Minster, Mr. James Callaghan and Foreign Minister, Mr. Anthony Crosland, met their West German counterparts Her Helmut Schmidt and Her Hans-Dietrich Genscher for a day of talks in Bonn on Wednesday (30 June).
Among the subjects discussed were direct elections to the European Parliament, world economic problems, southern Africa and the European Economic Community's fisheries policy.
SYNOPSIS: It was Mr. Callaghan's first visit to West Germany since he took over as Prime Minister in April. After the talks, he told reporters there were no major difference between the two countries on direct elections to the European parliament, the major topic at the talks. The leaders also discussed the recent economic summit in puerto Rico, and Herr Schmidt said there were signs of growing trust in the British pound. There has been some unease amongst smaller members of the EEC at the current round of talks between Britain, France and West Germany. The French President, Valery Giscard D'Estaing, was in London for talks with Mr. Callaghan last week, and will be meeting Herr Schmidt next week.
