  • Description

In the Malayan capital of Kuala Lumpur, 128 delegates and observers from 20 countries assembled at the Tunku Abdul Rahman Hall, September 19, for the 15th meeting of the International Rubber Study Group.

Sponsored by the Rubber Research Institute of Malaya, the ten-day conference will discuss the pattern of natural rubber production and consumption for the next year. This year's Kuala Lumpur conference is one of the biggest ever held to study every aspect of production and utilisation of rubber.

Countries participating area: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Burma, Canada, Ceylon, Czechoslovakia, Denmark, France, West Germany, Malaya, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Liberia, Netherlands, Thailand, United Kingdom, United States of America and South Vietnam. The International Bank and Food and Agriculture Organisation are also represented.

In his opening speech, Malayan Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman expressed full confidence in the future of natural rubber. He said a reasonable degree of stability in the production, trade and price of natural rubber was of "utmost concern" to Malaya and other countries whose economies depended on rubber. He thought that, in the continuing and expanding demand for new rubber, there would be room for both natural and synthetic rubber.

Malaya is the biggest producer of natural rubber, a position she gained over Indonesia recently. Western countries are the biggest buyers although Russia and China have been active buyers for some time.

An exhibition of rubber products was also held in conjunction with the meeting.
