    AUSTRALIAN TROOPS HAVE JUST COMPLETED THEIR FIRST RETURN TO A FAMOUS WARTIME BATTLEGROUND - THE KOKODA TRAIL, CLIMBING AND FALLING EIGHTY TORTUOUS MILES IN THE OWEN STANLEY RANGES OF PAPUA. IT WAS HERE IN 1942 THAT THE AUSTRALIANS FOUGHT A BITTER CAMPAIGN TO STOP THE JAPANESE ADVANCE ONLY 40 MILES FROM PORT MORESBY.

    TODAY, IN "EXERCISE LONG HOP", 150 MEN OF THE S.A.S. - AUSTRALIA'S FIRST SPECIAL AIR SERVICE COMPANY WERE FLOWN TO PAPUA FROM THEIR BASE IN PERTH, WESTERN AUSTRALIA. HANDPICKED FROM A DOZEN OTHER UNITS FOR THEIR TOUGHNESS AND INITIATIVE, THE PARATROOPERS WOULD BE AMONG THE FIRST TO GO INTO ACTION IN THE EVENT OF WAR. IN THIS TACTICAL EXERCISE, THEY PITTED THEIR SKILLS AGAINST 300 PAPUAN SOLDIERS OF THE PACIFIC ISLANDS REGIMENT, WHO TOOK ON THE ENEMY'S ROLE.

    THE AIM WAS TO RE-ENACT BROADLY THE JAPANESE ADVANCE FROM THE NORTH PAPUA COAST TOWARDS KOKODA AND OVER THE TRAIL, WITH PORT MORESBY AS THEIR GOAL. AT VARIOUS POINTS ALONG THE WAY, MOCK BATTLES WERE FOUGHT, PROVIDING VALUABLE LESSONS FOR THE AUSTRALIAN AND PAPUAN UNITS.
