    IT WAS A SPONTANEOUS GESTURE - WHICH BEGAN IN THE MORNING WHEN NEWS OF THE SENATOR'S DEATH FROM AN ASSASSIN'S BULLET IN LOS ANGELES WAS BROADCAST.

    THOUSANDS OF BERLINERS CONGREGATED AT THE WITTENBERGPLATZ AND MARCHED TO THE JOHN F. KENNEDY PLATZ.

    MOST OF THE MARCHERS WERE YOUNG BERLINERS - AS WERE THOSE WHO MOURNED THE DEATH OF THE PRESIDENT FOUR-AND-A-HALF-YEARS AGO.

    LAST NIGHT THEY LAID WREATHS AT THE FOOT OF THE MEMORIAL PLAQUE TO PRESIDENT KENNEDY AND MOUNTED A TORCH-LIGHT GUARD.
