The reign of political violence continues unabated in Italy with yet another journalist shot dead. Meanwhile magistrate in Milan have been taking the offensive in the war against terrorists by making direct appeals to workers.
SYNOPSIS: Mino Pecorelli was found shot dead in his car in the Prati district of Rome on Tuesday night (20 March). He had been shot five times.
Pecorelli was the editor of a political weekly. His magazine OP was a small non-party publication which specialised in revealing political scandals. Police investigations have yet to discover a specific motive for the murder.
Milan, Italy's greatest industrial centre is also the focus for much of the country's political violence..as the home of the terrorist Red Brigades. The Milan assistant prosecutor Fabio Viparelli visited the Breda Iron-works on Wednesday (21 March) to talk to the workers about urban terrorism.
The Breda factory was where a recently captured suspected terrorist, Raffaele Fiori had been employed. Fiori had been sought in connection with the leg shooting of a Fiat executive in Turin on the fourteenth of March. In the police raid in which Fiori was arrested, two of the guns used in the kidnap of former Prime Minister, Aldo Moro were found. Its an unprecented step for government law officers to take the fight against terrorism to the workforce. The theory behind the move is that many members of urban guerrilla groups start their political activities in the factories.
