Background: The First of May is celebrated in many parts of the world as May Day - the day of the workers. A colourful parade wounded through the streets of Ougadougou, the capital of Upper Volta, to celebrate the day. But it wasn't all family entertainment. SYNOPSIS: The First of May in Ougadougou, the capital of Upper Volta. As in many parts of the world, the First of May is celebrated as May Day - the day of the workers. A parade began the celebrations.

As families from all over the town and many of the outlying districts gathered to spend a day of entertainment, more serious things were occupying the minds of many of the workers. The day was not only a time to celebrate in general, but a time of consideration, a time to review the labour situation of the country and to see where improvements could be made in labour conditions. This was the main theme of a large rally of trade unionists that went on at the same time as the parade. The trade union leader who addressed the rally said that for the Upper Volta, May Day had a double significance.

The workers, he said, had made great sacrifices since independence in 1960. Now the time had come for permanent institutions to take the place of the temporary ones, and the workers lot should improve because of this, he said.
