As the United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, set off on his twelfth?

  • Description

As the United States Secretary of State, Dr. Henry Kissinger, set off on his twelfth visit in a month to see Syria's President Hafez Al-Assad, the Israeli Government waited to hear the outcome of his latest efforts to reach an agreement for separating the two countries' forces along the Golan Heights.

Dr. Kissinger had left Jerusalem for Damascus on Sunday (26 May), after attending a luncheon given in his honour by Mrs. Golda Meir, the retiring Israeli Prime Minister. At the lunch, both leaders toasted each other warmly.

Earlier, Dr. Kissinger had spent three-and-a-half hours discussing with Mrs. Meir and her Cabinet colleagues. The Cabinet then met to decide on their position in regard to the latest American proposals. These are believed to be based on new suggestions to reduce the forces of both sides under United Nations supervision.

After the Secretary of State had left for Syria, Israel's Foreign Minister, Mr. Abba Eban, told newsmen:-
Dr. Kissigner resumed his talks with President Assad in the Presidential Palace, immediately he arrived in Damascus. The talks continued throughout the whole of Monday, before the Secretary of State left to return to Israel. He told newsmen that his talks with President Assad had narrowed the points of difference between the two sides to "a very few".
