In the present school-year 80% of Warsaw first-formers are the only children in their families, and it looks that they will remain as such. The decrease in the number of children is observed both in schools and nursery schools.
While ten years ago the sight of mothers with prams and young children playing in sand-pits was characteristic of Poland, nowadays, it is teenagers who took their place. The family model with one or two children is prevailing.
The problems of the number of children in families have worried demographers for some time. This private and intimate sphere of life is, at the same time, of great importance for the development of the country and its population structure. Since 1957 a decrease in the number of births is visible. At the beginning it was regarded as a temporary tendency, but in due time it proved to be stable and increasing.
The number of pre-school children has decreased, but the number of kids attending nursery schools remains unchanged. It is so because parents saw that nursery schools not only take care of their children but also play an important role in the intellectual preparation of the children for the primary school requirements. Smaller number of children ansbles kindergartens to carry out their didactic functions.
Families with one child dominate among young couples. A family model in usually handed over from generation to generation. This tendency is called a demographical echo. The present day situation in Poland is a reverse demographical echo. This means that the young generation is unwilling to follow the example of their parents who, in the difficult post-war period, brought up several children which required a considerable effect.
A child's bringing up has not become more expensive, but the number of basic needs, regarded by the modern parents as indispensable, has widened.
The family needs have found their pro per place in the social polic???
The married couples who decide to have children are nowadays better qualified and possess professional ambitions and consumer requirements. Thus, the dominating model is that of two people joined together by common interests, and the parental satisfaction is only one of the values.
Let's have a look at the youngest generation. They have been brought up in much better conditions and their ambitions are higher and they have more possibilities of carrying them out. The school children who have been acquitted with the rudiments of science and technology since the early forms have better knowledge and wider horizons than their older colleges.
It seems that our population problem have bene overestimated. The large age-groups from the post-war demographic explosion begin to have children.
Even if they are going to be the only children in their families, there will certainly be more rams and higher demand for napkins, powdered mild, nutrients, soothers and toys. And so we wait for another demographic explosion.
