  • Description

Members of a South Korean delegation have returned to Panmunjom, the peace talks town in the demilitarised zone of Korea, with little indication of the success of a second round of formal talks on unification with North Korean Government representatives at Pyongyang.

The South Koreans, who arrived back on Friday(16 March) held two sessions with the North Korean delegates on Thursday.

Chief delegate for South Korea, Lee Hu-rak, told newsmen that a North Korean suggestion for a peace treaty between the two Korea's as a step toward unification was premature.

However, he was hopeful further discussions would find a way to a solution.

At the meeting, the North Korean chief delegate, Deputy Premier Pak Sung-chul, had renewed his Government's call for a peace treaty to enforce military cutbacks as a key step towards unification.

However, there was no joint announcement after the talks on whether the two sides had narrowed their differences in the approach to unification.
