  • Description

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) told athletes from Taiwan on Friday (16 July) that they could take part in the Montreal Olympic Games only if they agreed to drop all public claim to represent the Republic of China. But later in the day the Taiwan team managers announced that they were withdrawing from the Games because it could not accept the IOC proposals. The Committee's decision had been reached after negotiations with the Canadian Prime Minister on the previous evening, and it was announced by Lord Killanin, the President of the IOC at a news conference. He was followed by the President of the United States Olympic Committee, Mr. Phillip Krumm, who announced that they were satisfied by the compromise offered Taiwan, and would not now withdraw from the Games.
