  • Description

In a private ceremony at Queen's House, Colombo, Ceylon, Governor-General Sir Oliver Goonetilleke swore in the new 10-member cabinet of Premier Mrs. Bandaranaike, July 24. All are from the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which won 75 of 151 seats in the July 20 election; no posts were offered to Trotskyites or Communists, with whom the SLFP had an electoral alliance.

Mrs. Bandaranaike, the world's first woman Premier, was sworn in July 21; she did not contest a seat in the election, and must enter Parliament through a by-election within the next four months. Apart from the premiership, she will hold the Defense and External Affairs portfolios.

The Bandaranaike family - which has now given Ceylon two Premiers - is further represented in the new cabinet by Dias Bandaranaike, nephew of Solomon Bandaranaike, murdered September 1959. As Minister of Finance Dias Bandaranaike denied the rumour that the new Government intended to nationalise or expropriate British-owned tea and rubber estates.

    The Cabinet is as follows:-
Mrs. Sirimavo Bandaranaike, - Prime Minister, Minister of Defence and Minister of External Affairs; Mr. C.P. De Silva, Minister of Agriculture, Land, Irrigation and Power; Senator Sarath Wijesinghe, Minister of Labour and Nationalised Services; Mr. Maitripala Senanayake, Minister of Industries, Home Affairs and Cultural Affairs; Mr. T.B. Ilangaratne, Minister of Trade, Commerce, Food and Shipping; Senator A.P. Jayasuriya, Minister of Health; Mr. G.B. Kalugalla, Minister of Transport, Posts and Works; Mr. F.R. Bandaranaike, Minister of Finance; Mr. B. Mahmud, Minister of Education and Broadcasting; Mr. M. Samaraweera, Minister of Local Government and Housing; Mr. Sam Fernando, Minister of Justice.

After the swearing-in-ceremony the Cabinet left for a religious service at a nearby temple.
