Background: A Soviet seaman is recovering in Dunedin Hospital in New Zealand after badly injuring his hand while his ship, the "Pravoved" was working off the South coast of New Zealand's South Island.

The seaman, Gregoris Nicholas Lavrinovich, was lifted off the ship by a New Zealand Air Force helicopter, after rescue agencies in New Zealand answered a distress call from the "Pravoved".

When the seaman reached Dunedin Hospital he underwent an emergency operation. Afterwards, doctors said he was in no danger.
