  • Description

Benjamino Gigli, the world-famous Italian tenor who died at his villa near Rome on Saturday (November 30) lay in state during the weekend while relatives and friends visited and paid their last respects.

The 67-year-old master, whose Neapolitan songs, brought to many their first appreciation of classical singing, died from Pneumonia following an attack of Asian 'flu.

The sixth child of a humble cobbler, Gigli was born at Recanati on Italy's Adriatic coast. He went to work as a pantry-boy at the house of a local nobleman, and it was then that his remarkable voice was first noticed.

He made his stage debut at Roviga near Venice, in 1914 and then served four years in the Italian army.
