  • Description

A twenty-two-year-old Irishman, studying in the United States, has won the 78th annual Boston Marathon. Neil Cusack from Limerick, Ireland, ran the 26 mile course in two hours 13 minutes and 39 seconds - about three minutes outside the record set in 1970 by British runner Ron Hill.

A record 1,705 entrants took part in the race form suburban Hopkinton to the centre of Boston. The field included a number of women.

Cusack seemed in strong condition at the finish. He was breathing easily when the traditional laurel was placed on his head. He admitted later that he was tired, but would be back to normal after a few beers.

Tom Fleming of the Unites States came second for the second year in succession. He finished about 150 yards behind Cusack.

A Los Angeles housewife set a new women's record for the event. She covered the course in two hours 47 minutes 11 seconds.
