  • Description

The trial of the man accused of killing the wife of President Park Chung Hee of South Korea and attempting to assassinate the President himself in August, began on Monday (7 October) in Seoul, amidst tight security.

Mun Se-Kwang, 22, a Korean living in Japan, was taken to court while hundreds of armed police and prison officers cordoned off the court building. The elaborate security operation was mounted to prevent any attempt by the left-wing Japanese Red Army to rescue Mun.

Mun is charged with murder, attempted murder and rebellion, and he faces a possible death sentence if found guilty by the three judges. He described himself as a communist, and denied only one point in the prosecution charges -- that after missing President Park he deliberately aimed his next shot at Mrs. Park.

He added that he could never atone for the death of Mrs. Park and that before he left prison for the court he prayed for her.

The opening stage of the trial covered Mun's questioning by prosecutors and officially-appointed defence lawyers. The hearing was adjourned until next monday (14 October).
