  • Description

THE VAST KRUPP INDUSTRIAL EMPIRE, ORDERED TO BE SOLD BY THE ALLIES AT THE END OF WORLD WAR TWO, AND NOW WORTH SOME GBP500 MILLION, CELEBRATES ITS 150TH ANNIVERSARY ON NOVEMBER 20. IN A HUGE PLASTIC TENT CALLED AN "AIR HALL" A FORMAL CEREMONY WILL BE HELD MARKING THE FOUNDATION OF THE FIRM. DR. ADENAUER, THE WEST GERMAN CHANCELLOR, AND PRESIDENT LUEBKE, AND OTHER DIGNITARIES ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND.

KRUPPS WAS FOUNDED IN 1811 AS A TINY FAMILY STEEL UNDERTAKING. IN 1902 THE FIRM WAS INHERITED BY FRAU BERTHA KRUPP, AFTER WHOM THE BIG BERTHA GUN OF WORLD WAR ONE FAME, WAS NAMED. SHE MARRIED GUSTAV VON BOHLEM UND HALBACH FOUR YEARS LATER. IT WAS HE WHO WAS ACCUSED OF WAR CRIMES UNDER HITLER, WHEN KRUPPS, USING SLAVE LABOUR, AGAIN BECAME MAJOR ARMAMENTS PRODUCERS. BUT IT WAS HIS SON, THE PRESENT ALFRIED KRUPP, IN CHARGE OF THE WORKS SINCE 1943, WHO WAS TRIED BY THE AMERICANS IN HIS FATHER'S PLACE AT NUREMBURG. HERR KRUPP WAS SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS' IMPRISONMENT BUT WAS RELEASED AFTER THREE YEARS AND LATER HIS PROPERTY WAS RESTORED. ON RELEASE HE DECLARED HE WOULD NEVER PRODUCE WEAPONS AGAIN AND IN 1959 OFFERED GBP500,000 COMPENSATION FOR FORMER JEWISH SLAVE LABOURERS. ALTHOUGH KRUPPS NOW MAKES MILITARY EQUIPMENT FOR THE NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANISATION, THEY DO NOT MAKE ARMS OR BOMBS.

HERR KRUPP ACCEPTED THE OBLIGATIONS IMPOSED ON HIM BY THE ALLIED TO SELL HIS COAL AND STEEL HOLDINGS BUT TODAY, NEARLY 17 YEARS LATER, IT NO LONGER SEEMS LIKELY THAT THE CONDITIONS WILL EVER BE CARRIED OUT. NO ACCEPTABLE BUYER HAS COME FORWARD AND MEANWHILE 54-YEAR-OLD ALFRIED KRUPP HAS CONSOLIDATED AND RE-ORGANISED HIS HOLDINGS. KRUPPS NOW EMPLOY 111,000 PEOPLE. THEIR TURNOVER IN 1960 WAS GBP431 MILLION, OF WHICH EXPORTS ACCOUNTED FOR GBP70 MILLION. CONSIDERED TO BE ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST PROGRESSIVE FIRMS, KRUPPS' OUTPUT INCLUDED SHIPS, LORRIES, AIRCRAFT, ROLLING STOCK, TEXTILE FACTORIES, ATOM POWER PLANT, PAPER MILLS, EXCAVATIONS, FURNACES, DIESEL TRAINS AND SCORES OF OTHER STEEL PRODUCTS.

IN A PRIDE OF PLACE IN THE "AIR HALL" IS THE ORIGINAL HOME OF THE KRUPPS FOUNDER. ALSO DISPLAYED, LARGE-SCALE MODELS OF THE FLATS BUILT FOR KRUPPS WORKERS. IN THE PARK NEARBY IS THE "VILLA HUCEL" AND IN THE GROUNDS THE HUGE PROPELLOR OF THE 51,639-TON LUXORY LINER, "EUROPA" BUILT BY KRUPPS IN THE LATE 1920's. A ONE-TIME HOLDER OF THE BLUE RIBAND FOR THE FASTEST TRANSATLANTIC CROSSING, IT WAS SOLD TO FRANCE IN 1945 AS PART OF GERMAN REPARATIONS AND RENAMED "LIBERTE". THE LINER WAS SOLD THIS MONTH TO AN AMERICAN COMPANY TO BE USED AS A FLOATING HOTEL AT THE SEATTLE WORK FAIR IN APRIL.
