    TEN THOUSANDS PEOPLE LINED THE STREETS OF HAIFA YESTERDAY (MONDAY) FOR THE FUNERAL OF SIX OF THE SEAMEN WHO DIED WHEN THE ISRAELI DESTROYER SANK AFTER BEING ATTACKED WITH MISSILES ON SATURDAY.

    THE SEAMEN'S COFFINS WERE CARRIED ON WEAPON CARRIERS, AND THE FUNERALS WERE CONDUCTED WITH FULL MILITARY HONOURS.

    EACH COFFIN WAS DRAPED IN AN ISRAELI FLAG. HUNDREDS OF WOMEN WEPT AS THE CORTEGE PASSED SLOWLY THROUGH THE CITY TOWARDS THE MILITARY CEMETERY ON THE SLOPES OF MOUNT CARMEL.

    AMONG THE MOURNERS WERE THE ISRAELI CHIEF OF STAFF, MAJOR GENERAL YITZHAK RABIN AND THE ISRAELI MINISTER OF TRANSPORT, MOSHE CARMEL.

    THE BURIAL SERVICE WAS CONDUCTED BY THE CHIEF CHAPLAIN OF THE ISRAEL NAVY, RABBI SHLOMO GOREN. HE DESCRIBED EGYPT'S SINKING OF THE ELATH AS AN "INTERNATIONAL COWARDLY CRIME". WEEPING MOURNERS CALLED FOR RETRIBUTION.

    FUNERALS FOR OTHER VICTIMS OF THE SINKING WERE HELD YESTERDAY AT TEL AVIV, NETANYA AND TIBERIAS.
