Rescue workers expect to complete the escape hole for two trapped miners this afternoon (26 August).By mid-afternoon the enlarged escape shaft was within 4 feet of the two miners who have been trapped underground since 13 August.
If the work goes without a hitch, the two miners will be brought to the surface sometime tonight. They will be lifted...one at a time...in a specially designed steel capsule that is almost as wide as the 18-inch escape hole.
The two miners...David Fellin, 58, and Henry Throne, 28...were trapped by a rock slide 330 feet below the surface. After two failures a 12-inch escape hole was drilled through to them. That hole now is being enlarged to 18-inches.
A third trapped miner...Louis Bova...is separated from the other two by about 25 feet of debris.Nothing has been heard from him since 20 August.
