  • Description

THIRTY-FIVE MEMBERS OF THE SECURITY PERSONNEL WHO ACCOMPANIED THE DEPOSED PRESIDENT NKRUMAH OF GHANA ON HIS FLIGHT TO GUINEA AFTER HIS DEPOSITION, ALLEGEDLY AGAINST THEIR WILL, RETURNED THIS WEEK TO GHANA. THE GROUP TRAVELLED TO ACCRA FROM MONROVIA, WHERE THEY HAVE BEEN GUESTS OF THE LIBERIAN GOVERNMENT SINCE THE 16TH OF THIS MONTH.

THE GHANAIANS ARRIVED IN ACCRA ON MONDAY NIGHT (22 APRIL). THEIR RETURN BRINGS THE TOTAL NUMBER OF SECURITY PERSONNEL LEAVING GUINEA TO FIFTY. A GHANA GOVERNMENT STATEMENT RE-AFFIRMED ITS BELIEF THAT THOSE WHO REMAIN, EXCEPT FOR THE FEW WHO CONTINUE TO PROFIT FROM THEIR ASSOCIATION WITH THE EX-PRESIDENT, ARE BEING HELD AGAINST THEIR WILL. EVERY EFFORT WILL BE MADE TO SECURE THEIR RELEASE, AND THOSE RETURNING WILL HAVE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO SETTLE DOWN IN THE NEW GHANA. THE STATEMENT ALSO EXPRESSED ITS DEEP APPRECIATION FOR PRESIDENT TUBMAN OF LIBERIA'S EFFORTS IN OBTAINING THE RELEASE OF THOSE ALREADY RETURNED.

ON WEDNESDAY (24 APRIL) GHANA ORDERED THE RELEASE OF THE LAST 70 PEOPLE STILL IN CUSTODY IN GHANA AS A RESULT OF THE OVERTHROW OF PRESIDENT NKRUMAH IN FEBRUARY 1966.
