  • Description

President Erskine Childers of the Republic of Ireland received representatives of a special United Nations Anti-Apartheid Committee at his residence near Dublin on Monday (May 20).

The 16-man Committee is holding the first of several European sessions in Dublin. It is headed by Mr. Edwin Egebe Ogbu of Nigeria.

The Irish Foreign Minister, Dr. Garret Fitzgerald, told the Committee that some of the political violence and hatred in Ireland today seemed almost racial in character. For this reason, he said, the Irish were particularly aware of the potential for destruction which lay at the heart of what he called 'the unjust apartheid system'.
