  • Description

GENERAL WILLIAM WESTMORELAND, UNITED STATES MILITARY COMMANDER IN VIETNAM, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) VISITED LONG THANH, BASE CAMP OF THAILAND'S QUEEN COBRA REGIMENT.

DURING THE PREVIOUS NIGHT THE THAIS HAD KILLED AT LEAST 50 VIET CONG WHO ATTACKED THEIR JUNGLE CAMP 20 MILES (32 KMS) EAST OF SAIGON.

IT WAS THE FIRST VIET CONG ATTACK ON THE THAIS SINCE THE 3,000 STRONG ALL VOLUNTEER FORCE ARRIVED IN VIETNAM JUST OVER FOUR MONTHS AGO.

SOME OF THE VIET CONG PENETRATED THE BARBED WIRE AND MINE PERIMETER AS THE THRUST OF THE FIRST ATTACK CARRIED THEM INTO THE CAMP, BUT THE CRACK THAI TROOPS SEALED THE GAP AND HELD THEIR GROUND, A MILITARY SPOKESMAN SAID.

THE QUEEN'S COBRA REGIMENT -- MAJOR UNIT IN THE THAI CONTINGENT -- MOVED TO LONG THANH IN OCTOBER, A FEW WEEKS AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL IN VIETNAM.

LONG THANH IS IN KIEN HOA PROVINCE WHERE THE VIET CONG ARE RELATIVELY STRONG, THOUGH THEY NORMALLY ACT IN SMALL GROUPS RATHER THAN REGULAR UNITS. THE SIZE OF WEDNESDAY (20 DECEMBER) NIGHT'S ATTACKING FORCE WAS NOT KNOWN.
