  • Description

MR MILOVAN DJILAS, A FORMER VICE PRESIDENT OF YUGOSLAVIA, WAS RELEASED FROM PRISON AT SREMSKA MOTROVICA ON SATURDAY (31 DECEMBER) UNDER AN AMNESTY DECLARED BY PRESIDENT TITO. HE HAD SERVED HALF OF AN EIGHT YEAR SENTENCE IMPOSED IN 1962 FOR ALLEGEDLY DISCLOSING STATE SECRETS IN A BOOK PUBLISHED IN THE UNITED STATES FROM A MANUSCRIPT SMUGGLED OUT OF YUGOSLAVIA.

MR DJILAS HAS SPENT A TOTAL OF ALMOST NINE YEARS LOCKED AWAY AT SREMSKA MOTROVICA FOR PUBLISHING BOOKS AND ARTICLES IN WHICH HE CRITICISED NOT ONLY STALINISM BUT COMMUNISM ITSELF.

HE WAS MET OUTSIDE THE PRISON BY HIS WIFE AND FAMILY, AND LEFT WITH THEM TO SPEND THE NEW YEAR AT THEIR HOME IN BELGRADE.

MR DJILAS RELEASE FOLLOWS A YEAR OF POLITICAL REFORM IN WHICH PRESIDENT TITO HAS MADE MOVES TO SEPARATE THE POWERS OF GOVERNMENT AND THE COMMUNIST PARTY IN YUGOSLAVIA. BUT THE CONDITIONS OF HIS RELEASE, WHICH APPLY TO ALL CASES OF AMNESTY, PRELUDE MR DJILAS FROM PUBLISHING HIS WORKS OR TAKING PART IN PUBLIC LIFE FOR THE NEXT THREE YEARS.
