Background: The Turkish-Cypriot leader, Mr. Rauf Denktash had a meeting with the Jordanian Prime Minister, Mr. Zeid El-Rifai on Saturday (30 August) in Amman.
After their meeting, a brief statement was issued by the Jordanian Government which said Mr. Denktash had given the Prime Minister a briefing on the latest developments on the island.
Mr. Denktash arrived in Jordan on Thursday (28 August) for a three day visit.
Reports from Amman said the tour, which is part of a lobbying exercise to win support from other countries for Turkish-Cypriot negotiations with the Greek-Cypriots on the future of the island.
Mr. Denktash has already warned that unless there is a break-through he will be obliged to declare the Turkish sector in Cyprus an independent state. At the same time he's also objected strongly to a European Common Market decision to investigate complaints of violations of human rights by Turks on the island.
The delegation was due to return to Cyprus on Sunday, (31 August).
