  • Description

As the negotiations between the Canadian Government and the Quebec Liberation Front (FLQ) for the release of two kidnapped diplomats drag on, armed troops have been moved into Ottawa. They have been stationed in and around the exclusive residential district of Ottawa where many Canadian and Foreign diplomats live.

The troops, armed with submachine guns, are reinforcing the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the city in an effort to prevent more kidnappings by the FLQ. Earlier, the soldiers had been posted inside the Parliament building in Ottawa itself. In answer to opposition MPs protests at this move, the Canadian Defence Minister Donald Macdonald said they were there in error and that he had issued instructions for their withdrawal. However the military operations in the city itself will be maintained.

The two kidnapped diplomats are James Cross, British Trade Commissioner in Montreal and Pierre Laporte, the Provincial labour Minister. Mr. Cross was abducted nine days ago and M. Laporte was kidnapped on Saturday.
