    Gliding ...and this year's Sailplane Derby from Los Angles to Washington in the United State is on the second of May. It is the world's longest glider competition, and the only annual coast-to coast air race in the United States.

    SYNOPSIS: This year's race will be the seventh Sailplane Derby, and one of the five starters will be 1977 winner. Ingo Renner of Australia. Renner, who is also the world standard class soaring champion, is expected to be strongly challenged by two United States gliding champions, Karl Striedieck (STREE-DIK) of Pittsburg, and herb Mozer (MO-ZUR) from Detroit.

    A route of some 2900 air miles has been charted,, with major stopovers in Phoenix, Dallas, Oklahoma City, zar. Louis, Chicago and Pittsburgh.

    Also racing will be two-time winner Wally Scott of Odessa, Taxas, and Rudy Mozer, Herb Mozer's father. The price of a glider like this, with a 50 foot (15 metre) wingspan ...about 18,000 dollars.

    Here Scott performs a slow roll in his manoeuvrable craft... The competition is based on speed and daily distance covered. The sailplanes will fly at altitude of up to 14,000 feet (4,267 metres), and speeds of up to 120 miles per hour (193 k.p.h.). Each leg is 250 miles (402 kms) long and gliders will be towed to 2000 feet (607 metres) before being released. The gliders use thermal energy -- columns or rising air -- to remain aloft.
