    BRITAIN'S SIXTH COMPLETED NUCLEAR POWER STATION, AT HINKLEY POINT, BRIDGWATER BAY, SOMERSET, WAS OFFICIALLY OPENED YESTERDAY (FRIDAY) BY THE MINISTER OF POWER, MR. RICHARD MARSH.

    THE STATION COST GBP78,500,000 TO BUILD. MR. MARSH, IN HIS SPEECH INAUGURATING THE STATION, SAID EVEN LARGER ONES WERE BEING BUILT. "BRITAIN, WITH THE LARGEST NUCLEAR POWER PROGRAMME OF ANY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, HAS ESTABLISHED A WORLD LEAD IN THIS TECHNOLOGY WHICH SHE RETAINS TODAY".

    HINKLEY POINT HAS, IN FACT, BEEN IN OPERATION A FULL YEAR. LAST DECEMBER, IT PRODUCED MORE POWER THAN THE WHOLE OF THE NUCLEAR GENERATING CAPACITY IN THE UNITED STATES.

    WORKERS ARE PROTECTED FROM RADIATION BY CONCRETE WALLS ELEVEN FEET (3.35 METRES) THICK.

    HINKLEY POINT IS IN SOUTHWEST ENGLAND, IN THE COUNTY OF SOMERSET, ON A 164-ACRE (65-HECTARE) SITE NEAR THE BRISTOL CHANNEL.
