The second Qatar motor rally, held near the Qatar capital of Doha on Friday and Saturday (29-30 October) proved a tough test for drivers and machines.

SYNOPSIS: There were big crowds outside the Khalife Olympic Stadium in Doha on Friday for the start of the rally. The stadium, which was opened earlier this year, is named after the ruler of Qatar. Sheik Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani. First car to start was a Mazda 121 driven by Roger Taylor and Herbert Arthur from Kuwait, the favourites for the rally. Altogether there were 24 starters in the rally, which was held over 300 kilometres (about 190 miles) of rugged desert tracks. It was run in four special stages with a secret checkpoint.

Taylor and Arthur in car number one collided with a pick-up truck on the first stage, but recovered and went on to set the fastest times on all four circuits.

Thomas Heenan and Philip Watson in car seven, a Mazda 929, rolled their car during practice, but repaired the damage and went on to finish fourth in the rally. Car number five was one of the eight competitors who retired before the finish. The rough conditions caused a large number of punctured tyres, with few competitors escaping.

One of the leading cars was a Mazda 808 driven by Colin Wood and Ian McLymont. Car 12, a BMW driven by Tarek al Wazzan and Michel Salah was not so lucky -- it had three punctures and a holed petrol tank. Wood and McLymont went on to take overall first place.

Fayez Khali and Ibrahim Shomali had a quiet rally, having very little problem with car number 21, a Mercedes 280. They eventually finished in third place.

Favourites Taylor and Arthur put up the fastest time on all four sections, but missed a secret checkpoint which cost them a 30 minute penalty and the rally.

Car three, driven by Joseph Nafa'a and Nabil Jashan, also suffered little trouble and finished second. Sadallah Said and Marcel Guerry in a Datsun finished in ninth place.
