Background: INTRODUCTION: The Argentine President and head of the military government, General Jorge Rafael Videla, has spoken out against critics within his own army.

SYNOPSIS: General Videla, who is also the Army Commander, called for "monolithic unity" within the army and said that nothing and nobody would divert its leaders from their present course. General Videla made the remarks at an Army Day speech in Buenos Aires on Sunday (29 May). The Argentine leader re-emphasized that dialogue with civilian sectors was the best way to restore national unity. Argentina currently has about 84,000 men in the Army, with another 250,000 trained reservists.

General Videla's remarks were seen as a reply to right wing critics within the army who are believed to be impatient with the idea of consultation with politicians and others. The General came to power on 24 March, 1976, when the army overthrew the government of Maria Peron. Since then the army has been heavily involved in trying to wipe out various guerrilla groups.

As part of the Army Day celebrations, General Videla presented medals to a number of soldiers who had been wounded in actions against the guerrillas, most of whom are said to belong to left-wing political organisations.
