Background: Pan American's Boeing 707 jet airliner, Mayflower, landed in London, Oct 24, after a non-stop flight from Idlewild, New York, in six hours 42 minutes. This was 30 minutes slower that the Comet record of six hours twelve minutes.

The usually helpful west wind failed badly on this occasion. On board the 707 were 102 passengers, over twice as many as the BOAC Comet carries, though.

The Mayflower left London on Tuesday for New York with a complement of journalists. Her landing at London Airport will be the last before regular passenger services between London and New York are introduced on Oct. 27.
