    AT THE SAME MEETING, ANOTHER NEW ZEALAND RUNNER, VETERAN MURRAY HALBERG, COASTED HOME TO WIN THE 5,000 METRES FROM AUSTRALIA'S PAT CLOHESSY.

    WHILE THE 5,000 METRES WAS BEING RUN, AMERICA'S BRIAN STERNBERG BROKE HIS WORLD POLE-VAULT RECORD - NOT ON FILM.HE FAILED TO GO HIGHER.USING A FIBRE-GLASS POLE, HE VAULTED 16 FEET EIGHT INCHES (5.079 METRES), BREAKING THE RECORD BY AN INCH (2.54 CMS).
