  • Description

IN HANOVER, WEST GERMANY, ABOUT 1,500 PEOPLE TODAY (MONDAY) TOOK PART IN A RALLY HELD BY THE NATIONAL DEMOCRATIC PARTY (N.P.D.) TO LAUNCH THE PARTY'S CAMPAIGN IN THE THIRD OF THE WEST GERMAN REGIONAL ELECTIONS. THE MAIN SPEAKER AT THE RALLY WAS THE PARTY'S VICE-CHAIRMAN, ADOLF VON THADDEN.

OUTSIDE THE HALL WHERE THE RALLY WAS HELD, POLICE STOPPED A LOUDSPEAKER VAN COVERED IN POSTERS SUPPORTING THE WEST GERMAN PEACE UNION (DFU). WHILE THE POLICE WERE TALKING TO THE DRIVER OF THE VAN, NPD SUPPORTERS COVERED SOME OF THE POSTERS WITH ONES SUPPORTING THEIR OWN PARTY.

AMONG THE AUDIENCE WHICH HEARD HERR VON THADDEN SPEAKING WAS ONE MAN WEARING AN IRON CROSS.

THE ELECTION IN LOWER SAXONY, THE THIRD REGIONAL ELECTION IN WEST GERMANY IN THREE MONTHS TAKES PLACE IN JUNE THE FOURTH. THE ELECTIONS ARE BEING REGARDED AS TESTS OF ANY INCREASED POPULARITY IN THE PARTY. IN THE OTHER TWO ELECTIONS, IN SCHLESVIG-HOLSTEIN AND THE RHINELAND PALATINATE, THE N.P.D'S SUCCESSES FELL WELL SHORT OF PRE-ELECTION PREDICTIONS.
