    The first meeting of the Indo-Tanzania joint commission on technical, scientific and economic co-operation started in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Monday (29 December). The commission was set up last January.

    India's Minister of External Affairs, Yeshwantrao Balwantrao Chavan and Tanzania's Finance and planning Minister, Amir Jamal, are co-chairman of the commission.

    The Tanzanian delegation at this week's meeting was led by Dr. Temu and India's by Mr. Sanyal. In the last few years economic and technical co-operation between the two countries has expanded substantially. About 600 Indian technical experts are now working in Tanzania in a wide variety of fields such as engineering, accountancy, architecture, small-scale industry and medicine.

    Trade has also increased and it is expected that a formal agreement for more trade and collaboration on projects in Tanzania will be announced as a result of this week's talks.

    SYNOPSIS: The first meeting of the Indo-Tanzanian joint commission on technical, scientific and economic co-operation opened in the Indian capital, New Delhi, on Monday.

    The commission was set up last January during a visit to India by Tanzanian Prime Minister, Mr. M. Kawawa.

    The Indian delegation was led by mr. Sanyal. In the past few years economic and technical co-operation between the two countries has increased substantially.

    Doctor Temu led the Tanzanian delegation and addressed the conference on behalf of his country. Several cabinet ministers and senior government officials were also delegates to the talks.

    Tanzania is one of the world's poorest countries and its increasingly strong ties with India are important to its development as a successful socialist state. It's expected there will be a formal agreement for further trade and technical collaboration as a result of this week's talks.
