Background: The Israeli army has acquired a new long-range field gun which would enable it to shell Egyptian positions on the other side of the Suez Canal from twenty miles away. The gun, a U.S. manufactured M-107 175 millimetre self-propelled weapon, was displayed to newsmen along with other newly-acquired weapons in a demonstration in the Sinai Desert on Tuesday (April 11).
The new gun, claimed to have probably the longest range in the world, provides Israel with a fire-power advantage over Egypt, said an Israeli officer during the demonstrations. Egypt's longest-range gun, he said, is a static Soviet-made weapon, with a maximum range of 18.5 miles.
Israel has previously stated its willingness to withdraw its troops from their Suez Canal positions as part of a peace agreement - provided no Egyptian troops were allowed to cross the canal.
Technical details of the new field gun:
Shell: 140 pounds. (63 kilograms).
Shell: range: 20 miles (32 kilometres).
Shell "kill radius": 100 yds. (Metres).
Vehicle travel range without refuelling: 440 miles. (708 kilometre???
Vehicle speed: 30 miles per hour. (48 K.P.H.).
