  • Description

The energy crisis in the united states has probably hit car workers harder anyone else.

With patrol in short supply, some car manufacturering plants have had to put thousands out of work. Many plants making larger cars like Pontiacs and Grand Prixs have had to shut down altogether. People buying new cars are turning to smaller models which use less petrol.

In Atlanta, Georgia, General Motors Lakewood Assembly plant was one of those which had to close down. But management at the Doreville plant on the other side of town saw the change coming as the petrol situation deteriorated. Their production line once produced 65 standard size Chevrolets and Pontiacs an hour, but it was quickly restocked to build intermediate size Chevrolet and Oldsmobiles. Management there has been able to keep all its staff.

General Motors has had to lengthen temporary lay offs for about 7,209 workers and put nearly 30,000 on temporary idleness. At least the workers at the Doreville plant have been spared because management there anticipated the declining sales of large cars and moved early.
