  • Description

More than four million South Vietnamese students returned to school at the beginning of the new school year this month.

Opening day was an occasion of greatest ceremony with singing, dancing, speech-making and tributes to Ho Chi Minh.

It is estimated that there are over 9,000 elementary, 761 intermediate and 593 high schools in the country.

Since the new administration took over at the fall of Saigon last April, all private schools were turned over to the Government.

The Education Minister, Nguyen Van Kiet, has been quoted as saying, "The revolutionary Government welcomed the private school owners voluntarily offering their schools to the State."
Some high school and university teachers in South Vietnam are being "re-educated". A senior South Vietnamese official said that several of these schools would re-open after new history and social science courses were written.

The "re-education" of the teachers in new social and political courses is in conformity with the policy of the new Government.

Deputy Education Minister Le Van Chi has said that in the past non-State schools and universities taught a normal curriculum with some religious studies inserted into the regular courses.

"This can no longer be permitted", he said. He added, "These schools now will teach courses just like all the others, under control of the Government, although they will still be considered as private schools."
