  • Description

This year's harvest in Bangladesh promises to be the best ever, and the country is rapidly becoming self sufficient in basic food production.

SYNOPSIS: It's rice harvesting time in the country now and in the village of Tongi a community centre has been set up to organise work in fields.

The people are eager to start farming, as about one million of them had on work before the harvest began.

A United Nations-sponsored campaign of self-reliance, known as the "Food for Work Programme", has achieved good results. The unemployed villagers have been encouraged to work in the fields in exchange for a daily ration of food.

Bangladesh needs 15 million tons of food grain a yea to provide for its 80 million people. Current estimates predict a crop of almost 17 million tons of rice and wheat by the end of the current harvesting period, in the middle of January next yea. This would mean a substantial surplus replacing h deficits of previous years.

In the past -- the country has had to spend about 300 million U.S. dollars a year for food imports. This year Bangladesh, one of the world's poorest nations, should attain self-sufficiency in food production.
