    DAHOMEY'S PRESIDENT EMILE ZINSOU WELCOMED THE DEPUTY MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS FROM TAIWAN, MR. H.K. YANK, AS GUESTS OF HONOUR AT THE CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE NINTH ANNIVERSARY OF DAHOMEY'S INDEPENDENCE RECENTLY.

    IN COTONOU'S MAIN STREET, AVENUE MONSEIGNEUR STEINMETZ, PRESIDENT ZINSOU, TOGETHER WITH THE PRESIDENT OF THE SUPREME COURT, M. LOUIS-IGNACIO PINTO, GOVERNMENT MEMBERS AND GUESTS WATCHED THE TRADITIONAL MILITARY MARCH-PAST.

    WHILE AIRCRAFT FLEW OVERHEAD, COMMANDOS, INFANTRY AND MOTORIZED UNITS FILED PAST THE PRESIDENTIAL DAIS. VETERANS, YOUTHS, DANCERS AND ACROBATS ALSO TOOK PART IN THE PROCESSION.

    DAHOMEY GAINED ITS INDEPENDENCE FROM FRANCE ON AUGUST 1, 1960. TO MARK THE NINTH ANNIVERSARY, PRESIDENT ZINSOU DECREED THAT EACH TOWN AND VILLAGE IN THE WEST AFRICAN REPUBLIC SHOULD CELEBRATE MODESTLY -- BUT WITHIN FERVOUR.

    PRESIDENT ZINSOU HAS HIMSELF JUST COMPLETE HIS FIRST YEAR IN OFFICE. HE WAS APPOINTED BY A MILITARY GOVERNMENT ON JULY 17 LAST YEAR, AND WAS ASKED TO FORM A CIVILIAN GOVERNMENT. A REFERENDUM 11 DAYS LATER CONFIRMED HIM AS PRESIDENT.
