  • Description

At a meeting in the Teachers' Club, Teheran, May 12, the leader of the Persian Teachers' Union, Mr. Darakhshesh, announced that the new Government had agreed to meet their pay claims and the teachers strike would be called off. Members of the School Teachers' Union had just finished a series of talks with officials of the newly appointed Prime Minister, Dr. Ali Amini.

With the news that the strike had ended, May 13, children turned out in force to return to school. By the end of the day it was clear that both students and teachers had returned to work as normal.

A few days earlier the Prime Minister, in the broadcast to the people, appealed to the people to cooperate with the Government in its efforts to save the country from bankruptcy. Government departments were ordered to serve no more than on dish at official lunches and dinners. No alcohol will be served at official receptions.

On May 14, the new Government arrested four Generals, including two former Ministers, in a drive against corruption. They are being held on charges of embezzlement and misappropriation. Special committees have been set up to look into all reports of corruption.
