Yachting.....and the New Zealand entry "Waverider" on Tuesday (22 August) took a provisional lead after coming second in an important race in the Half Ton World Championships off Poole, Dorset.
SYNOPSIS: Here's a cluster of yachts rounding a mark at the end of a run, with French craft `Arlikone the Second' leading narrowly from "Waverider". This was the fourth race on the day's schedule. At this stage of the competition, Arlikone the Second" was lying in forty-second place out of fifty on the provisional points table. "Waverider" was then lying in second overall place, less than ten points behind the leader, the United Kingdom yacht "Indulgence". "Weverider's" skipper Tony Bouzaid has been showing fine tactical finesse championships.
This is "Indulgence" in which Graham walker had used his immense knowledge of these waters shrewdly to set her off to a cracking start in early races.
"Waverider" again. Tony Bouzaid had shown her mettle and his by winning the first race of the Championships on August the 17th by three seconds from "Indulgence". The following day, he had managed only eighth place, a full nine seconds behind winner "Indulgence". But the New Zealander had absorbed the lessons from that disappointment.
The ultimate winner of the race was belgian entry, "Kalik", which was in the lead as early as the first buoy mark. Up goes a spinnaker to help keep that lead.
"Waverider" looks a winner here, but was ultimately unable to catch "Kalik". Still the points counted, and they put "Waverider" into the lead for the championship. This time, "indulgence" finished well back.
