  • Description

Motor rallying .. and in Kenya, last year's winners of the East African Safari, Bjorn Waldegaard and Hans Horszelius, in a Porsche had a firm lead on points at the start of the second leg of this year's race. Rough conditions on the second day (24 March) were responsible for knocking out a third of the field, and a section of the route was chopped out of the race.

SYNOPSIS: Rain, mud and flooding were a real challenge for the drivers. But as 22 of the 68 starters were forced to retire through the conditions, the Swedish pair of Bjorn Waldegaard and Hans Horszelius, rallied through in style. They told reporters they were looking for a fast lead on the leg.

Behind the Swedes at the end of the first leg was the works French Peugeot 504 Coupe of Finnish driver, Timo Makinen and Jean Todt of France. They led the race out of Nairobi at the start and drove well to maintain their third placing.

In second place at the end of the first leg was another Finnish driver, Rauno Aaltonen, with his local navigator Lofty Drews in a factory Japanese Datsun 160J. They appeared to be taking the streams cautiously and on this occasion had a team member check the ford for depth, before driving through.

But not all were successful. The Mercedes Benz 280 of Britons Andrew Cowan and Johnstone Syer, was just one of the many cars which stalled when water splashed under the bonnet. The car had to be pushed out of the stream and towed away. At the time Cowan was in the top ten placings.
