Iranian leader Ayatollah Khomeini is building up pressure on the United States. On Wednesday (7 November) he flatly refused to have any dealings with the special American envoy sent to negotiate the release of American hostages in Teheran. The United States has warned all its citizens in Teheran to leave but some that have tried have been turned back. Other Americans fearing that they will be added to the sixty hostages already held in the United States embassy have gone into hiding. Another concern for America is oil supplies. The Ayatollah Khomeini has said oil supplies may well be cut off to enforce their demand for the Shah to be returned.
SYNOPSIS: In Teheran anti-American feeling is running high. While students and Khomeini supporters demonstrate the sixty Americans and forty Asians being held hostage at the embassy remain out of view. The students say all the Americans are spies and are being questioned. The students also say the hostages are being well-treated. On Wednesday (7 November) Ayatollah Khomeini's officer announced a ban on demonstrations in Teheran. The ban was partly in response to leaflets issued by the previously unknown young crusader moslems calling for support for former premier Dr. Bazargan. At the same time the committee of students handling the takeover issued a communique claiming that President Carter offered to expel the Shah from the United States. But the U.S. government has firmly rejected the students demand that the Shah, undergoing cancer therapy in New York, be handed over to Iran as the price of freedom for the hostage.
The student group has announced that none should harass or attack any foreign citizens... including Americans. But the Americans, who may have misjudged the consequences of admitting the Shah for medical treatment, remain cautious. As for the fate of the hostages.. it remains unclear. The Ayatollah Khomeini has refused to meet with special envoy Ramsey Clark who is carrying a message for the revolutionary leader. And Khomeini has made it clear that he is considering shutting off oil supplies to America unless Washington agrees to extradite the Shah.
