The president of the African Football Confederation, Mr. Ato Yidnekachew Tessema, has spoken out against?
The president of the African Football Confederation, Mr. Ato Yidnekachew Tessema, has spoken out against too many international football competitions.
At a press conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on Friday (12 March), Mr. Tessema said the Confederation encouraged zone competitions, but felt they posed a threat to football within individual countries.
He said African countries were already obliged to compete in several international competitions.
Mr. Tessema said that in countries where football was still played by amateurs, too many international competitions obliged national associations to postpone local competitions, to the detriment of young players.
He said this was why the Confederation would not like to see competitions organised just for the sake of holding them.
Mr. Tessema, who is the Ethiopian Commissioner for Sport and Physical Training, was recently re-elected as president of the Confederation for another four years.
