    THE QUEEN MOTHER WAS LADY ELIZABETH BOWES-LYON, YOUNGEST DAUGHTER OF THE EARL OF STRATHMORE AND KINGHORNE, UNTIL HER MARRIAGE IN APRIL, 1923, TO THE DUKE OF YORK. SHE BECAME QUEEN ELIZABETH ON THE ACCESSION OF HER HUSBAND, AS KING GEORGE VI, IN DECEMBER, 1936, AFTER THE ABDICATION OF HIS BROTHER - THE PRESENT DUKE OF WINDSOR. SHE WAS WIDOWED IN FEBRUARY, 1952.

    SHE RETURNED TO LONDON FROM SANDRINGHAM ON JANUARY 22.

    APART FROM ATTACKS OF BRONCHITIS, LARYNGITIS AND INFLUENZA, SHE HAS ENJOYED GOOD HEALTH OVER THE YEARS. IN 1956 AND 1960, SHE WAS REPORTED TO HAVE SUFFERED TWO MINOR LEG INJURIES, BUT NEITHER STOPPED HER STRENUCUS ROUND OF ENGAGEMENTS.
