  • Description

POLICE RIOT SQUADS RACED TO A COLLEGE CAMPUS IN KUALA LUMPUR ON MONDAY WHEN 300 STUDENTS, DEMONSTRATING AGAINST MALAYSIA'S RECENTLY PASSED LANGUAGE BILL, STOPPED EDUCATION MINSTER MOHAMMED KHIR JOHARI FROM LEAVING HIS CAR.

THE RED-HELMETED POLICE, WHO ARRIVED IN SIX TRUCKS, DID NOT GO INTO ACTION AS THE MINISTER HAD ALREADY MANAGED TO DRIVE AWAY IN ANOTHER CAR. HE HAD ATTENDED THE COLLEGE FOR A CEREMONIAL ADDRESS.

CHANTING SLOGANS SUCH AS "MALAY IS BEING KILLED" THE STUDENTS LATER STAGED A LOCK-OUT BY SQUATTING BEHIND THE IRON GATES OF CAMPUS.

IT WAS THE THIRD DEMONSTRATION BY MALAYS IN THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL SINCE PARLIAMENT ALLOWED CONTINUED USE OF ENGLISH IN CERTAIN FIELDS -- LIKE PARLIAMENT AND THE LAW COURTS -- WHEN PASSING A BILL TO
MAKE OF THE 13 MALAYSIAN STATES.

CONCESSIONS IN THE BILL WERE MAINLY FOR MALAYSIA'S BIG CHINESE AND INDIAN COMMUNITIES. MALAYSIAN'S TWO BORNEO STATES OF SARAWAK AND SABAH, POPULATED MOSTLY BY INDIGENOUS PEOPLES AND CHINESE SETTLERS, WILL NOT HAVE TO CONSIDER ADOPTING MALAY UNTIL 1973.
