Background: Groups of Iranian students were demonstrating in Paris on Wednesday (15 December) demanding an immediate release of two imprisoned colleagues. The two were arrested on 4 November this year after an alleged attack on an Iranian diplomat in France.

SYNOPSIS: M. Homayoune Keykavoussi, Councillor at the Iranian Embassy in Paris, was attacked at night by two masked men. Later the city's police detained two Iranian students, M. Nader Oskoui and M. Mahamad Reza Takbiri and accused them of the assault. Four other Iranian studying in France were expelled from the county. But the demonstrators claim the two men are not responsible for the incident and therefore should be immediately released from prison.

Prior to the demonstration, groups of Iranian students in France as well as in other countries went on a hunger strike to protest against the detection of their colleagues. The strikers feared they would be reconginzed by the SAVAK, the political police of Iran, and wore masks.

The students also claim that M. Keykavoussi is the head of SAVAK's clandestine operation in Franoe and those imprisoned and expelled are thought of as victims of the Shah's secret political service.

One of the protesting Iranians said that the evidence given by the four expelled students would be of a crucial importance for the defence of the other two accused men. Amnesty International is of a similar opinion. Iranians who led the demonstration in Paris on Wednesday (15 December) call themselves a Marxists-Leninists student's intervention group.
