  • Description

Anti-fascist demonstrators tried to disrupt prayers for Rudolf Hess, Hitler's former deputy, being offered at a West Berlin church on Friday (26 April).

It was a confrontation of different generations, with about 200 young demonstrators trying to bar the church entrance to many elderly people. Helmated police finally cleared a way for the Hess sympathisers, holding back the chanting demonstrators. No violence was reported.

The occasion for the confrontation was the 80th birthday of Rudolf Hess. He spent it, alone, in Berlin's Spandau jail, where he has been held for the last 28 years and is now the sole prisoner.

The Soviet Union, Britain, France and the United States have joint control over the jail. Plans for Hess's wife and son to visit him on his birthday were vetoed by the Soviet Union, reportedly because demonstrations outside the jail were feared.
