Background: A UNITED STATES EIGHT-MAN HIGH-LEVEL MILITARY MISSION TO WORK OUT DETAILS OF AMERICAN ARMS AID FOR MALAYSIA'S DEFENCE AGAINST INDONESIA, ARRIVED IN KUALA LUMPUR, THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL, ON NOVEMBER 11.

THE MISSION, LED BY MR. PHILIP MANHARD, REGIONAL PLANNING ADVISER IN THE STATE DEPARTMENT'S FAR EASTERN AFFAIRS BUREAU, WAS MET ON ARRIVAL BY THE SECRETARY TO THE MALAYSIAN MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, MR. KADIR BIN SHAMSUDDIN, THE CHIEF OF THE STAFF, MINISTRY OF DEFENCE, COLONEL UNGKU NASARUDDIN BIN UNGKU MOHAMED, MR.DONALD McCUE, CHARGE D'AFFAIRES OF THE AMERICAN EMBASSY AND OTHER OFFICIALS.

THE MISSION'S VISIT TO THE MALAYSIAN CAPITAL STEMS DIRECTLY FROM THE VISIT MADE BY MALAYSIAN PRIME MINISTER, TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN, TO WASHINGTON LAST JULY, WHEN PRESIDENT JOHNSON PLEDGED SYMPATHETIC STUDY OF WHAT MILITARY EQUIPMENT THE UNITED STATES COULD SUPPLY TO MALAYSIA IN HER STRUGGLE AGAINST INDONESIAN AGGRESSION. THE TUNKU ALSO ASKED THE PRESIDENT TO APPROVE CREDIT SALES OF ARMS, PLANES, TROOP-CARRYING HELICOPTERS AND SMALL CRAFT FOR USE IN REPELLING INDONESIAN INSURGENTS IN MALAYSIAN BORNEO TERRITORIES.

WHILE IN KUALA LUMPUR, THE MISSION WILL DISCUSS WITH MALAYSIAN DEFENCE LEADERS THE POSSIBILITY OF TRAINING MALAYSIAN MILITARY PERSONNEL IN THE UNITED STATES AS WAS AGREED BY PRESIDENT JOHNSON AND THE TUNKU IN WASHINGTON.

AT AN AIRPORT PRESS CONFERENCE, MR.MANHARD SAID THE TYPE OF MILITARY EQUIPMENT MALAYSIA WANTED AND THE TERMS OF UNITED STATES CREDIT SALES HAD YET TO BE WORKED OUT.

DURING THEIR TWO WEEK STAY, THE MISSION WILL VISIT MILITARY ESTABLISHMENTS AND TRAINING CENTRES IN MALAYA. THEY ARE ALSO EXPECTED TO PAY A VISIT TO SINGAPORE, SABAH AND SARAWAK.
