  • Description

More than 11,000 supporters of former Indian Prime Minister, Mrs Indira Gandhi, clashes with police on the streets of New Delhi on Sunday (19 March) after they had unsuccessfully tried to enter the home of Prime Minister Morarji Desai.

SYNOPSIS: Most of the hundreds of demonstrators were members and supporters of Mrs. Gandhi's newly-formed Youth Party. At first a police cordon prevented them from breaking through to the Prime Minister's home. But the barrier soon collapsed and rioting between the demonstrators and police started.

The demonstrators wanted to deliver a memorandum protesting against a recent newspaper interview in which Mr. Desai was quoted as saying India's annexation of the tiny Himalayan Kingdom of Sikkim in 1975 had not been desirable step.

During the fighting demonstrators threw a fire bomb, but it landed harmlessly in the middle of the road.

As the demonstration continued police retaliated with a baton charge to disperse the crowd.

Tear gas was also used. Reports said a number of demonstrators and 12 policemen were injured. According to the police about 200 members of the youth wing of Mrs. Gandhi's Congress faction were arrested.
