Background: In New Zealand, domino enthusiasts set a new world record for toppling dominoes during a television charity appeal for the International Year of the Child. Two hundred and twenty-nine thousand dominoes were set up in an Auckland auditorium and toppled on Monday (2 July).

SYNOPSIS: Recognition from the Guinness Book of Records was just one reason for the Auckland attempt. Each domino was set up for the children of New Zealand and success would mean donations for projects to celebrate the International Year of the Child.

It was just three weeks since the last world record was set. He record was set by an American, who toppled a hundred and sixty-nine thousand dominoes. Here, Jeremy Bowick was the lucky starter. He won his chance to take the champion title in a raffle. And once the dominoes were off he and his friends suddenly forgot the frustrations of the previous eleven days. They had been plagued by mice, dangerous draughts and leaks in the roof.

It was certainly a creative set-up....
And as the last dominoes trickled down the letter I.Y.C., Jeremy Bowick became the new world champion domino toppler. And International Year of the Child was aptly remembered by some rather over-grown children.
