    PRESIDENT MODIBO KEITA OF MALI, WHO RECENTLY ASSUMED ALL POWERS IN THE COUNTRY AFTER THE RESIGNATION OF THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, SAID LAST SATURDAY (JANUARY 20) THAT THE LEADERS OF THE COUNTRY'S ARMY HAD ACHIEVED A MIRACULOUS TRANSFORMATION AMONG THEIR TROOPS.

    PRESIDENT KEITA WAS SPEAKING IN BAMAKO AFTER AN IMPRESSIVE PARADE MARKING THE FIFTH ANNIVERSARY OF MALI'S ARMY.

    HE SAID THE ARMY LEADERS HAD ACHIEVED THE MIRACLE OF TRANSFORMING COLONIAL LEGIONARIES INTO SOLDIERS OF A NATIONAL AND REVOLUTIONARY ARMY, UNITED WITH THE PEOPLE.

    THE PRESIDENT ALSO SAID THAT THE ARMY WAS NOT CREATING ANY PROBLEMS FOR THE GOVERNMENT. HE PRAISED THE ARMY'S "POLITICAL CONSCIENCE".

    THE MALI CHIEF OF STAFF, MAJOR SEKOU TRAORE, SAID THE ARMY HAD HELPED IN HARVESTING RICE AND IN AIDING THE VICTIMS OF FLOODS CAUSED BY THE RIVER NIGER.

    THE PARADE, WHICH FEATURED SMART AND WELL-DISCIPLINED TROOPS AND PARACHUTISTS, WAS WATCHED BY SENIOR OFFICERS FROM SEVERAL OTHER AFRICAN COUNTRIES.

    THE STRENGTH OF THE ARMOURED CONTINGENTS AND MILITARY VEHICLES WAS DESCRIBED BY OBSERVERS AS "IMPRESSIVE".
